Der Stern M31-2014-DS1, ein gelber Überriese mit ursprünglich etwa 13 Sonnenmassen, zeigte ab 2014 eine ungewöhnliche Helligkeitszunahme, um dann zwischen 2017 und 2022 rapide zu verblassen – bis er im visuellen Licht praktisch unsichtbar wurde. Eine Supernova-Explosion wurde nicht registriert. Die Schlussfolgerung der Autoren: Der Stern muss direkt zu einem Schwarzen Loch kollabiert sein, ohne vorher als Supernova zu explodieren. Nur etwa 2\% seiner Materie wurden ausgestoßen, der Rest (rund fünf Sonnenmassen) stürzte direkt in das neu entstandene Schwarze Loch.

Die traditionelle Theorie sagt voraus, dass Sterne mit mehr als etwa acht Sonnenmassen in einer Supernova enden. Der Mechanismus des „direkten Kollaps“ ist zwar theoretisch seit den 1970er-Jahren bekannt, aber die Bedingungen dafür sind im Standardmodell extrem eng und selten. Zudem bleibt unerklärt, warum die Neutrino-Emission in einem solchen Fall nahezu isotrop erfolgt, wie neue Analysen des Doppelsternsystems VFTS 243 nahelegen.
